Cuddura di centu ova

cuddura-centu-ova

The "cuddura di centu ova" is an ancient Easter tradition in the small village of Forza D'Agrò.
The "Cuddura cu l'ovo" is a large starchy dessert characterized by the presence of a variable number of whole hard-boiled eggs artfully arranged on the top. The number of eggs must be strictly odd to be a good omen. In the village of Forza D'Agrò it is traditional to build a giant format of the famous cuddura. The dessert is made with about 100 eggs. The eggs will never be exactly 100 but 99 or 101 to respect the superstition. According to tradition, some citizens gather in the days before Easter, making the huge cuddura and arranging the 100 eggs on several layers until they obtain a pyramidal shape. On Easter Monday in the square or in the town hall, the mayor will break and eat the first egg of the great cuddura as a sign of good omen for all the inhabitants of the village.
