"Dracunara" of Sciacca

dracunara-di-sciacca

There is a tradition in Sciacca of keeping a scythe in the fishermen's boats as a sign of good wishes.
The city of Sciacca boasts an ancient seafaring tradition. According to popular tradition, fishermen used to set sail with their boats carrying scythes, which would have been used to hit the "Dracurana", ie tornadoes, by mowing them right at their base, called Dragon's Tail.
This ancient folk tale over the centuries has turned into a tradition: carrying a scythe in your boat is a good omen both for fishing and for a simple return to dry land.
