In correspondence with the ancient center of Gulfi, a sanctuary was erected towards the 4th century which, according to tradition, was visited by San Gregorio Magno.
In fact, it is said that San Gregorio Magno, before being elected pope, visited Sicily to go to the monasteries he founded in Bruscello and Vizzini. During this trip he stopped in Gulfi and kneeling before the altar of the Nativity, he seems to have left the imprint of his knee imprinted on the step, which is still preserved today in the sanctuary of the Virgin of Gulfi in memory of the miraculous event and where a plaque was placed with the inscription: Super lapidem hunc ante Nativitatis aram, olim stratum, S.Gregorius PP. (ut antiquitus traditum est) genuflexit, quum templum hoc invisit
