Legend of the Rabbit Island

According to a popular legend, the origin of the name Rabbit Island is linked to the presence of rabbits on the island.
It is said that, several years ago, a colony of rabbits reached the islet just when it was connected to the mainland through a sandy isthmus. When the sand bridge disappeared, the rabbits were trapped on the island and reproduced here, becoming so numerous that the place was called Rabbit Island .
There is no certain documentation of the presence of rabbits , what is certain, however, is that a curious phenomenon occurs periodically on the island of Conigli which leads to the formation of an isthmus that connects the island of Conigli with the island of Lampedusa.
