In the seaside village of Marzamemi, the southernmost city in Italy, the scenes of the film "Sud" were shot.
The film, directed by Gabriele Salvatores with Silvio Orlando, Francesca Neri, Antonio Catania, Claudio Bisio, Marco Manchisi, Mussie Ighezu, Gigio Alberti, Renato Carpentieri, tells the story of three southern unemployed and an Eritrean unemployed. The four decide to take over the Marzamemi school-polling station at the dawn of an election Sunday, as a sign of rebellion against fraud organized by a local politician. By chance they find themselves holding hostage or rather guests, the daughter of the deputy who is the strongest candidate in the elections and her boyfriend. In the end, the four, surrounded by a disproportionate number of carabinieri, are captured.
The film was shot entirely in Marzamemi. The school occupied is the Palazzo di Villadorata in Piazza Regina Margherita. Other glimpses of the seaside village appear such as Largo Balata, the place where the Honorable Cannavacciuolo telephones the Minister of the Interior to inform him about the raid on the polling station, and Via Letizia, where the procession in favor of the occupants of the polling station unfolds.
