In the splendid village of Monterosso Almo some scenes of the film Man of the stars were shot.
The Man of the Stars is a 1995 film directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. The film earned a 1996 Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. It sees as protagonists Sergio Castellitto, in the role of Joe Morelli, and the then newcomer Tiziana Lodato in the role of Beata and the contribution of established actors also in the supporting roles.
The film is about an imposter goes around Sicily pretending to being a cinema agent looking for new talents, inviting people to audition for the sum of 1500 lire, promises fame and money.
The film was shot in Sicily, mainly, between Ragusa Ibla and Monterosso Almo. The initial scenes were shot in Matera. Other scenes were shot in the Gangi Vecchio abbey, at the Grotte della Gurfa and in the ruins of Poggioreale.
The scenes shot in the village of Monterosso Almo took place mainly in Piazza Sant'Antonio and it is said that during the set , Giuseppe Tornatore, in order not to interrupt the stage of organization and planning of the scene, never took breaks to have breakfast or lunch but nibbled the typical "scaurati" biscuits, or boiled biscuits, because he could also keep them in his pocket as this biscuit, being hard dough, it did not crumble and was perfect for munching.
