Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Agira
The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Agira boasts of being the oldest parish in the country. Its construction dates back to the late 12th and early 13th centuries.
The façade is very simple and has no artistic elements of note. The interior has two naves, divided by four columns that support pointed arches with Romanesque capitals.
At the bottom of the right aisle is the marble altar of the Madonna and a polychrome wooden statue of St. Bartholomew dating back to the end of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth century. In the only chapel to the left of the main nave there is a 15th century Cross, painted on both sides, where the Crucifixion, the Resurrection, and the symbols of the four Evangelists are represented.
