Church of San Giovanni Evangelista Piazza Armerina

Church of San Giovanni Evangelista in Piazza Armerina stands on the northern side of the Piano del Padre Santo.
It was built between the 16th and 17th centuries on an ancient oratory dating back to 1361 dedicated to the same saint.
The facade is anonymous, the its function as a religious building is testified by the presence of the bell tower. There are two eighteenth-century portals in local stone through which you enter the single nave of the church.
The interior, in contrast to the facade, is richly decorated: all the surfaces have been frescoed by the Flemish painter G. Borremans and by his pupils. On the vault of the nave the Immaculate is represented, on the side walls some scenes from the life of St. Placido, in the pillars female figures, in the lunettes of the dome the mystery of the Eucharist, on the side surfaces of the main altar the Nativity and the Epiphany .
