Traditions

In Caccamo, on the occasion of Palm Sunday, the event U Signuruzzu a cavaddu takes place. It is a ceremony of oriental origin that commemorates the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem and boasts the title of the oldest traditional manifestation . The distinctive feature of this event is the age of its protagonists, Jesus and the twelve apostles are played as children. The children who interpret the apostles carry long branches of palms in their hands which, along the way, intertwine forming arches under which the child representing Jesus passes. According to tradition, an altar boy, the smallest of the Russian aspirants, interprets Jesus. The child wears the cassock and red accessories and moves on the back of an elegantly harnessed and flowered donkey.
