Easter in Caccamo

Traditions

In Caccamo the rites of Holy Week are deeply felt and attended. Of particular importance are the rites of Palm Sunday and the sacred representation of the Passion of Christ.
On Palm Sunday, the event U Signuruzzu in cavaddu takes place. It is a ceremony of oriental origin which recalls Jesus' entry into Jerusalem and boasts the title of the oldest traditional event. The distinctive feature of this event is the age of its protagonists, Jesus and the twelve apostles are played by children. The children who play the apostles carry long palm branches in their hands which they intertwine along the way, forming arches under which the child who represents Jesus passes. According to tradition, Jesus is interpreted by an altar boy, the smallest of the aspiring russuliddi. The child wears a red cassock and accessories and moves on the back of an elegantly caparisoned and flowered donkey.
