Feast of San Giacomo in Caltagirone - Illuminated Staircase

The Feast of San Giacomo, Patron Saint of Caltagirone, takes place in the month of July.
On the occasion of the celebrations, the traditional and evocative show of the illuminated Staircase of Santa Maria del Monte takes place , during which 4000 candles or tiles, prepared and colored strictly by hand according to an ancient craftsmanship which is handed down from father to son, placed along all the steps, they are lit to create a great design of lights and colours. The drawings created are generally inspired by themes concerning the city and the Patron Saint.
On the evening of July 24th, hundreds of people equipped with a small wooden stick, which today replaces the ancient "buceddu", i.e. a dry twig of wild plant, light up the individual tiles to create a complex pattern of lights with a unique charm.
On 25th July the procession of the Relic and Simulacrum of the Patron Saint takes place through the city streets with the participation of the Authorities and the Historical Procession of the Civic Senate. In the evening it is possible to once again witness the lighting ceremony of the illuminated staircase of Santa Maria del Monte.

In the month of January, the celebration of the Patronage of San Giacomo takes place in memory of the 1693 earthquake.
