Necropolis of San Nicola in Chiaramonte Gulfi

The Necropolis of San Nicola in Chiaramonte Gulfi can be considered part of a large rural settlement which developed in the Imperial, Late Antiquity and Byzantine eras.
Over time, the area has yielded a considerable amount of finds, a sign of the importance of the town, not coinciding with ancient Akrillai, which it was located along the axis of connection between Syracuse and Selinunte, of which we have uninterrupted news from the 6th century BC. up to 1290.
To date, 184 tombs have been found, most of which of the pit type dug directly into the rock, some stone sarcophagi and some earthen tombs. All the tombs are of the bisome type, i.e. with double burials.
Funerary equipment was found in many tombs. From the richness of the grave goods, it is believed that the exponents of a community of high social class who lived in the lowland at the foot of the hill on which the ancient cemetery was located were buried here.
