Arab Fountain in Alcamo

The Arab fountain of Alcamo, also known as the fountain of San Vito dates back to the period in which the city of Alcamo was under the domination of the Arabs.
It was built near a source of water, in the farmhouse of Alqamah. Following a strong earthquake that occurred at the end of the fifteenth century, it was most likely damaged and later restored.
When the town concentrated around the Castle of the Counts of Modica, sheep farming began around the fountain which led to the construction of a drinking trough.
The façade has two washbasins, with two water outlets and pilasters surmounted by capitals. The trough, in blocks of travertinoid calcarenite stone, dates back to the first half of the 19th century.
