Festa della Madonna delle Milizie a Scicli

The Feast of the Madonna delle Milizie in Scicli is celebrated every year in May and commemorates the descent of the Virgin on horseback armed with a sword which frees the city of Scicli from the attack of the Turks. The image of the Madonna warrior of Scicli is unique in religious iconography.
On the occasion of the celebrations in honor of the Madonna delle Milizie of Scicli, a busy religious program takes place which culminates with the solemn procession of the simulacrum of the Virgin on horseback.
On the occasion of the festivities, a moreover, the Historical Re-enactment of the miraculous feat of arms in 1091, when the Virgin on horseback saved the city from the Turks, and the festival of the turkish head of Scicli, typical dessert of the village that symbolizes the trophy of the vanquished in this battle.
