Many scenes of the film Johnny Stecchino were shot in Sicily, one in particular in Catania, in the Massimo Bellini theater.
Johnny Stecchino is a 1991 comedy written by Benigni and Cerami. The story tells of Dante, driver of a school bus for the disabled, played by Benigni, who meets Maria, played by Nicoletta Braschi, who is struck by Dante's resemblance to his Jonny Stecchino, again played by Benigni. Maria concocts the diabolical plan to make everyone believe that Dante is her Jonny so as to have him eliminated by his enemies. Eventually the plan is foiled by Maria herself. There are many Sicilian locations in the film, in particular several scenes were shot in Palermo, Taormina and Giardini Naxos. The scenes set in Catania were shot inside the Massimo Vincenzo Bellini Theater: although the film shot the Massimo theater in Palermo externally, the scenes were not shot inside the theater as well because at the time of the shooting it was being restored.
