An ancient popular legend tells that a princess named Maletta reigned over the fortress of the Maletto Castle.
It is said that the princess commanded a band of brigands who, after raiding the nearby places, found refuge in the fortress. Here they hid their loot, certain that, given the harshness and inaccessibility of the place, they would never have been reached. Thus it was that the town of Maletto was born around the fortress, inhabited by bandits and governed by the princess of the fortress.
The legend finds historical confirmation in the fact that, over the centuries, Maletto was inhabited by people who reached this place both for the concessions and benefits granted by the feudal lord, both for the exemptions enjoyed by the fiefdom. It is therefore considered probable that someone moved to Maletto to escape the king's justice.
