Some scenes of the film "Brother sun, sister moon" were shot inside the Cathedral of Monreale.
Brother Sun, Sister Moon is a 1972 film directed by Franco Zeffirelli, freely inspired by the life and works of St. Francis. The film won the 1972 David di Donatello for best direction to Franco Zeffirelli and was nominated for an Oscar for best scenography.
Franco Zeffirelli chose the Cathedral of Monreale to set some scenes of the film and precisely those where San Francesco is received by the Pope approving his Rule. Many young people were engaged as extras in more than two weeks of shooting, in an atmosphere of excitement for the numerous VIPs present: Alec Guiness, Graham Faulkner, Judie Bowker, Valentina Cortese are just some of the main performers.
