Aedicule of San Pietro in Militello in Val di Catania
Aedicule of San Pietro in Militello in Val di Catania is what remains of the ancient Church of San Pietro and Paolo.
The church was built in the mid-15th century. In 1619 it was renovated and the classicist portal was created, characterized by an exotic rounded frieze, which we also find in the Church of San Benedetto. The earthquake of 1693 caused extensive damage to the structure and the subsequent abandonment led to the decay of the building. In the 1960s the church was demolished and the fragments of the portal were rebuilt on the remains of the back wall, mixing them with those of the high altar.
Important works now kept in the Treasure of Santa Maria la Stella belonged to this church: the fifteenth-century panel attributed to the so-called Master of the Cross of Piazza Armerina; the sixteenth-century wooden statue of Saint Paul by Giovan Battista Baldanza jr.
