The feast of San Giuseppe in Borgetto takes place in the month of March, on the occasion of the liturgical feast of March 19, and involves the setting up of the traditional and ancient Canteens of San Giuseppe.
The canteens of San Giuseppe are a ancient tradition that has taken place in Borgetto since the 18th century. It is tradition to visit the canteens, set up by the faithful in their homes, on the eve of the festival: the visits go until late at night and all visitors are offered bread with olives and wine.
On the day of the festival, the children, who wear a white tunic, taken from their homes by the tammurinaru and accompanied to the Mother Church where they take part in the Holy Mass. At the end of the Celebration they are accompanied to their respective canteens and, before entering the house, they recite the Parti di San Giuseppe, a piece in dialect that narrates the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt. Once they enter the house, shouting Viva San Giuseppe, the child, who impersonates Jesus, is made to stand on a chair, the lady of the house washes his hands, dries them and makes him dip two fingers in a glass of water in order to bless the table. Thus the banquet begins, the child is fed by three unmarried boys or girls who carry a white embroidered towel on their left shoulder. Traditionally the child must eat at least three bites of each dish and only after this can it be distributed to those present.
The celebrations end in the afternoon with the solemn procession of the simulacrum of the Holy Patriarch.
