Easter in Vizzini
The rites of Holy Week in Vizzini begin on Palm Sunday with the traditional blessing of the olive branches and palms followed by the traditional procession.
On Holy Thursday in the parishes the Sepulchre is set up, full of scented flowers and wheat or lentil shoots, grown in the dark to obtain a golden color. The traditional Holy Mass in Coena Domini also takes place.
On Good Friday, a long procession of the faithful with candles and a band plays sad funeral hymns, accompanying the simulacra of the Dead Christ with Our Lady of Sorrows and Saint John.
On Easter Sunday, the traditional cugnunta takes place, a representation of the Annunciation, during which the simulacrum of Saint John the Evangelist approaches that of the Madonna, wrapped in a black cloth, to inform her of the resurrection of her son Jesus, but the Madonna, with a sign of denial, shows that she does not believe him. The statue of St. John the Evangelist runs from the Lord to the Madonna once again to give the happy news, but since he is not believed, the third time he moves together with the Lord, at a slow pace, towards the Madonna who finally, seeing her Son too, changes her mind: the black cloth falls from the statue of the Madonna, the band plays a cheerful march, the bells ring, the fireworks display begins and the crowd joyfully celebrates the Gloria.

09:30 Exit of the simulacrum of the Risen Jesus from the Church of Calvary through the city streets.

12:00 “A CUGNUNTA” and DAYTIME FIREWORKS SHOW.
Piazza Umberto I
The simulacra will then continue towards the Basilica of San Giovanni Battista.
17:30 Musical entertainment outside the Basilica of St. John the Baptist.
19:00 Holy Mass in the Basilica of San Giovanni Battista.
Followed by the exit of the simulacra through the city streets.

return to the Church of Calvary.
