The Bread of San Giuseppe is a hard dough bread prepared on the occasion of the feast of San Giuseppe. It represents the main element of the traditional altars of St. Joseph.
The recipe is very simple and uses only poor ingredients. In some places in Sicily, fennel seeds are added to the dough of Pane di San Giuseppe, which give the loaf an intense aroma and scent.
The peculiarity of this bread is the fact that it is finely decorated and shaped to create the most varied forms: the stick of St. Joseph with the lily, the bread of the Madonna, that of the Child Jesus. There are also other forms that recall the awakening of nature: flowers, fruits and ears of wheat. In some places in Sicily, Pane di San Giuseppe is made by making a cross cut on the surface or making inlays with floral motifs.
