Numerous scenes of the famous film Divorzio all'Italiana were filmed in Ispica.
The Sicilian town of Agromonte, where Pietro Germi sets this comedy based on Giovanni Arpino's novel A crime of honor, does not exist in reality but it is the town of Ispica. In numerous scenes it is possible to recognize the historic center of the city of Ispica: piazza Maria Josè, via Garibaldi, the Church of San Bartolomeo... Corso Umberto di Ispica can also be recognized, the place where the funeral scene was filmed.
Other scenes of the film were shot in Ragusa and Catania.
Divorzio all'Italiana is a 1961 film that won the Oscar for best original screenplay. The protagonist is Marcello Mastroianni, in the role of Fefè, Baron Ferdinando Cefalù. The man has been married for twelve years to a woman he no longer loves while he has a strong passion for his sixteen-year-old cousin Angela, played by Stefania Sandrelli. The young Fefè is ready to ride the flaws of the Penal Code to follow his interests. Italian law did not allow divorce but allowed honor killings, i.e. murder punished with a lesser penalty for those who have been dishonored. Fefè puts his plan into action: find a lover for his wife and then try to surprise them together and commit the murder under the guise of an honor killing, in order to then be able to marry Angela. Unfortunately, things will not go as the protagonist had foreseen, even if after various vicissitudes he will still manage to marry his young cousin. However, the film ends with the girl paying attention to the young helmsman of the boat on which she is on her honeymoon with Mastroianni.
