According to Greek mythology, the Aeolian Islands are named after the god Aeolus, the tamer god of the winds.
Legend has it that Aeolus lived in Lipari, and was able to predict the weather conditions by observing the shape of the clouds puffed by an active volcano, which is believed to be the Stromboli volcano. This skill earned him great popularity on the island as its inhabitants were largely fishermen and knowing in advance the weather events was of great help.
According to a theory thanks to this skill, Aeolus, which was in fact a simple Greek prince skilled in predicting the weather from the clouds, I go down in history as the mythological god Aeolus able to control the clouds and the winds.
