Sant'Egidio abbot was acclaimed the patron saint of Linguaglossa following a miraculous event that saved the town from the eruption.
According to legend, during an eruption, the town was abandoned as a precaution. Only a paralytic old lady remained in the village, forgotten by everyone. It was then that Sant'Egidio appeared to her and invited her to get up and go and ring the church bells. The fellow citizens ran up and, amazed by what had happened, carried out what the old lady had reported: they took the stick of Sant'Edigio and stuck it in the ground, in front of the lava flow. Then the second miracle happened: the lava stopped and the town was saved.
