The 1693 Val di Noto earthquake also hit Piedimonte Etneo hard. Many monuments were destroyed but remain in memory thanks to a canvas.
The seventeenth-century canvas of the Madonna delle Grazie preserved in the sacramental wing of the Mother Church of Piedimonte Etneo reproduces, in their original location, many of the ancient city monuments which have now disappeared: the lily-shaped bell tower of the church of San Michele, the massive crenellated volume of the prison, the first church of San Ignazio, the Palazzo del Principe and the old fountain on the Matrix floor.
