Capuchin Convent in Caltagirone
The ancient Convent of the Franciscan Order of the Capuchin Minors, and the adjoining church dedicated to Santa Maria dell'Odigitria, have survived the earthquake which in 1693 shook the southern area -east of Sicily.
In recent years all the ancient works of art, the sacristy and the chapel where the remains of the Saint rest have been restored and a museum has been established.
The Picture Gallery was built, full of rare and precious works; the choir has been transformed into a museum of sacred art. In the crypt under the church a permanent nativity scene was created and to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the death of Father Innocenzo a six-meter-high marble monument with a two-meter bronze statue was erected.
On the first floor there is the Sala del Tesoro with silver, albastri, sacred vestments, devotional gold in 8 bands of red velvet, with jewels from the late 18th to the 20th century.
