Luigi Sturzo Civic Museum in Caltagirone
The Luigi Sturzo Civic Museum at the Bourbon Prison of Caltagirone is part of the vast civic museum of Caltagirone, which includes the Luigi Colaleo Collection International Nativity Museum, the Museum of the Caltagironesi and Sicilian Historic Villa , and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.
The museum occupies the Bourbon Prison, a magnificent and severe building by the Syracusan architect Natale Bonaiuto and a rare example of an eighteenth-century prison typology.
The collections are currently divided into different exhibition sections: the archaeological section, which offers a significant overview of the archaeological richness of the territory and of the city itself; a picture gallery, which presents a collection of high quality paintings, evidence of the rich artistic activity of the city, before and after the earthquake of 1693; a historical collection of museums, which allows, through epigraphs, sculptures, paintings, objects and furnishing furniture an important insight into the role of the "Universitas", in the sacred, profane and civil spheres.
