The Borgo di Carcaci, in the territory of Centuripe, is an ancient abandoned village, a former duchy that was coveted by the noblest Sicilian aristocratic families.
Today the village presents itself with the charm of seventeenth-century rural and colonial architecture, where , a castle, the owner's welcoming residence and a small lava stone church dedicated to Santa Domenica. The village has a rigorous plan consisting of rural houses and narrow streets that lead into the countryside. The heart of the village is made up of the church of Santa Domenica, a scenic church in lava stone with a centric plan. On the sides of the road, a sequence of buildings all the same, enhances the strong symmetry of the village's layout.
Borgo Carcaci was once one of the most coveted fiefdoms of Sicilian aristocratic families given its proximity to the "regia trazzera" that led from Adrano to San Filippo di Agira and, from here, headed to Palermo, and to the great abundance of water , due to the presence of the Simeto and Troina rivers, which guaranteed fertility on the soil and generous crops. In 700 it became the duchy of the illustrious Paternò-Castello family, under which it experienced a period of flourishing activity. In 1818, with the abolition of feudalism, the Duchy of Carcaci became a municipality and was aggregated to Centuripe. Today, unfortunately, it is practically in a state of neglect, but this has not deprived it of its charm.
To reach the small village, you have to follow the road that leads from Catania to Adrano and, after crossing the Simeto, you meets a widening, half bordered by rural houses, from which some narrow streets lead into the countryside. One of these, which goes south-east, rises slightly towards the heart of the village.
