Church of San Giuseppe in San Cataldo

The Church of San Giuseppe in San Cataldo is one of the main places of worship in the village.
The original structure was built around 1660 by Raffaele lo Puzzaro. A few decades later the Church collapsed following a landslide and was rebuilt in the first half of the 18th century at the behest of Don Baldassare Amico Roxas. Over the centuries the Church has been enlarged to take on its current appearance.
The façade dates back to the end of the 19th century and is divided into two orders. On the first level there are three entrance portals surrounded by Doric style elements. On the second order, in composite style, there is a large central window surmounted by a double belfry.
The interior, divided into three naves by rows of pillars crowned with Corinthian style capitals, is enriched with stucco work made by Ferdinando and Filippo Rini. The vault of the central nave presents a cycle of frescoes by the Gelese painter Emanuele Catanese which illustrate moments in the life of Saint Joseph.
Inside the church there is the Statue of Saint Joseph, the same one that is shown and accompanied through the streets of the city on the occasion of the annual Feast of San Giuseppe in San Cataldo.
There are crypts in the basement of the Church.
