Feast of the Madonna di Porto Salvo in Lampedusa
On the island of Lampedusa, the month of September is dedicated to the celebrations of the Madonna of Porto Salvo, patroness and protector of the island and of the fishermen.
The celebrations traditionally begin on the first Sunday of September, when the statue is carried on the shoulders by fishermen in a long procession that starts from the Sanctuary and ends at the Mother Church, where the simulacrum remains on display until 22 September.
During the festivities three further processions of the simulacrum of the Virgin take place: a first procession takes place at sea with the boats of the island fishermen; the second procession accompanies the simulacrum of the Madonna through the city streets; finally, a last procession takes the Madonna back to the Sanctuary, after crossing the port with hymns and shouts in dialect.
The celebrations end in the evening with popular games in the square, the fish festival, shows, band concerts and spectacular fireworks 'artifice.
