Feast of Maria SS della Cava in Marsala
In Marsala, the celebrations in honor of the Patron Saint Maria Santissima della Cava take place in January, on the occasion of the liturgical anniversary, and in May, in memory of the collapse of the Sanctuary of Maria SS. della Cava.
In a cave in the Porticella area is the Sanctuary of Maria SS.ma La Cava. In this place, according to a legend, a statue of the Madonna, probably hidden to protect her from iconoclastic persecution.
The Feast of the Madonna della Cava in Marsala in January begins a few days earlier with the novena and ends on January 19 with the celebration of Holy Mass at the sanctuary and the solemn procession of the simulacrum through the city streets.
The Feast of the Madonna della Cava which is held during the month of May includes a rich liturgical programme, prayer vigils and conferences.
