Feast of San Giovanni in Pozzallo

The Feast of San Giovanni in Pozzallo is celebrated on June 24, the anniversary of the birth of the Saint. The festivities traditionally begin the week before the festivity.
The Feast of San Giovanni is widely attended by the entire population and in particular by emigrants and sailors. Emigrants to America also celebrate the anniversary by carrying a copy of the simulacrum of San Giovanni kept in Pozzallo in procession, while sailors organize a suggestive procession to the sea in Pozzallo.
The procession to the sea, called varchiata, it sees many small boats decorated with red flags and the image of the Saint following in procession a fishing boat adorned with flowers on which the Simulacrum of Saint John the Baptist is placed. Traditionally, the procession to the sea anticipates by a few days the solemn procession through the streets of the center of Pozzallo of the Simulacrum and the Reliquary Arm of the Saint.
A rich program of events is also organized for the celebrations, such as folk and entertainment shows, guided tours and dancing evenings.
