Church of the Crucifix in San Fratello

The Church of the Crucifix, also known as the Baptistery of the Santissimo Crocifisso, is the oldest religious building in the village.
The church stands in a privileged position from which you can enjoy a splendid panorama that extends as far as the islands Aeolian.
It was built in the 15th century and has a characteristic octagonal shape typical of baptisteries, since, with high probability, this was originally its function in support of the nearby church of San Nicolò di Bari.
The building originally it had three entrances, today two have been walled up. It is believed that the main entrance was located in the west-facing wall. It had an access staircase, which was removed after it was closed. Of particular value is the keystone of the arch made of white marble, consisting of a bas-relief with an angel's head and surmounted by the bas-relief sculptures of the Pietà and the symbols of the passion of Christ.
The interior, in baroque, it is richly decorated with plaster casts and golden festoons.
Outside the small church there is a stone cross dating back to 1664.
