Saracen Caves in Salina
The Grotte dei Saraceni are natural caves artificially enlarged by digging into the tuff. They are located along one of the most challenging routes to the top of Monte Fossa delle Felci, at the height of Serro dell'Acqua.
It is believed that the caves were exploited as a rock settlement, and that later, in the 7th century AD, have become a refuge for the inhabitants of the island of Salina who escaped the terrible raids of the Saracen pirates. These caves are in fact located in very difficult to reach places and are hidden by dense woodland vegetation. Being artificial caves built inside other natural caves, the Saracen caves show themselves as a series of tunnels hidden one inside the other, many caves are in communication by means of internal passages.
It is advisable to visit the caves accompanied by a local guide.
