Parco Archeologico di Selinunte
Things to do, attractions, interesting facts
State: TP - Area: Selinunte and Belice Valley
Selinunte was an ancient and flourishing classical civilization of the Mediterranean, today it is the largest archaeological area in the world.
Selinunte was founded in 650 BC. by the colonists of Megara Hyblea, near the current Augusta, and took its name from "Selinòn", from the bee leaves, a wild parsley. Selinunte experienced centuries of prosperity and development, so much so as to threaten the territories of Segesta. We arrive at a clash between Segesta, supported by Carthage and Athens, and Selinunte, supported by Syracuse, Agrigento and Gela. In 409 BC Selinunte was sacked and destroyed, and thus concludes the story of one of the most glorious Greek colonies in the West.
The park of Selinunte includes seven ancient temples, some of which are in a good state of conservation, built according to a rigorous Doric order, sanctuaries, necropolis, the caves of Cusa and an archaeological museum.
