The Arabs first settled in this place, who settled here with small colonies, then the Byzantines and the Normans. After the Norman domination, the land of Racalmuto was granted to the Barresi family who erected the important fortress of "Castelluccio", to better defend the town.

Racalmuto is an important stop on the Road of Sicilian writers being the town that gave birth to Leonardo Sciascia.
