Saponara

Area: Messina surroundings

Saponara is a small village that stands on the slopes of the northern slope of the Peloritani Mountains.
Its origins are very ancient, but its foundation year is not known. The most accredited hypothesis traces its foundation back to the year 1000, given the presence of the Castle, now in ruins, on the hill overlooking the town.
Starting from the 12th century, Saponara obtained the rank of feud and since then several dynasties have succeeded one another.
Saponara is a land of ancient traditions that are still alive today in popular festivals.
In 1908 it was seriously hit by the earthquake and many of its buildings were seriously damaged.
