Its history is linked to that of nearby Patti, of which it was a flourishing hamlet until 1636. It then obtained its independence with the payment of the sum of four thousand scudi to the Royal Court of Philip IV of Spain, engaged in the war against France.
Montagnareale was a rich agricultural village, also important for breeding and the production of silk and linen. Activities which in the past were so flourishing to the point that many of the products were also exported.
Today the village is surrounded by a splendid natural landscape which can be admired along its numerous paths, the presence of mills and oil mills recalls its history an agricultural village, its small center preserves some valuable monuments.
