Caltagirone

Area: Central Sicily

Caltagirone is world famous for the handcrafted production of ceramics. Due to this peculiarity it is known as the city of ceramics, fortress of jars, hill of vases, or as a land of clay.
The city is situated in a scenic amphitheater-like position between the Iblei and Erei mountains and dominates the plain of Catania and Gela.
The traces of its millenary history embellish tourist routes and itineraries thanks to an archaeological, artistic and architectural heritage of considerable value.
Caltagirone is a UNESCO heritage together with the other seven late Baroque cities of the Val di Noto.
